The latest addition to the MTCS | K-12 Academic Community, Banaadir Math & Science (M&S), is off to a great start. Currently in a seventh and eighth grade, M&S are held to high educational standards through an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
“Sciences are my favorite,” exclaimed Hibo, and during a visit to Jon Drummond’s Design and Modeling class, you could see why that would be the case. Both students and teacher seemed excited about what they were doing.
Through Project Lead the Way curriculum, the nation’s leading provider of STEM programs, students were challenged to design a foot orthotic and then present their projects, process and reflections to the class. The unit was filled with creativity, strategic thought and challenges. Students quickly learned new skills and collaborated as a team to solve problems.
Mohamed “liked needing to work together to build the prototype orthotic and present to the rest of the class.” For Fatha, it was about “doing a new thing – designing something new.”
Mubashir thought, “The project was fun and reflecting about the design process was challenging.” Fun and challenging – perfect ingredients for learning.
