We also have a unique weekly experience called Family Groups. Every student receives their family group at the beginning of the year, which is a mix of two teachers (not their teacher), students from all grades K-5. Family groups meet every Friday morning and in the 2013/14 school year we had three exploration terms: careers, art, and science.
How big is MTS Elementary and how many students are in each classroom?
There are about 130 students at MTS, and we will probably grow a bit the next couple of years, but we are committed to staying small and keeping class sizes small. Average classes are less than 20 students which allows us to work more individually with students, understand what they are capable of, and create a productive learning environment.
What is one really special thing about MTS Elementary?
All the staff know all the students, we are unique that way. MTS is a place where students belong. Because of the Family Group concept, students have the opportunity to work with all kinds of staff throughout their elementary years. Family group also builds special bonds between students of other grades and older students get the opportunity to be a leader.
We like to explore and try things! We take students to the University of Minnesota where they worked with college students to explore possible futures, and toured the campus. Lots of important learning takes place away from the classroom, field trips are an important part of learning.
