The MTS Digital Media Academy is a school-within-a-school dedicated to providing instruction to young people who are passionate about the digital arts. Our mission is to prepare students for a post high school experience; whether it is an internship at an ad agency or a transition to a college for media.
At the DMA, we value strong academics and dedicated attendance. Our students are school leaders in both grades and behavior. We believe that parent-school communication is important and keep in constant contact with our families.
“Be confident… put in effort and learn. It’s okay to be scared, but you’ve got to get over it to get what you want…”
DMA music students study hip-hop, rock-n-roll, and soundtrack & Foley production for film. They produce each other’s tracks in our professional suite of recording studios, record vocals in our sound-proof “Whisper Room,” and learn music theory in the music lab. The work that our students create is used in promotional pieces, in student films, and is preserved on our annually produced CD.
Students at the Digital Media Academy study all aspects of the filmmaking process – writing a professional screenplay, shooting a short film or animation, editing on the latest professional equipment and software, and entering and promoting a film in festivals. Students leave the academy with an understanding of video production that gives them a distinct advantage when entering an internship or going to film school.
Work in the Graphic Design department is focused on developing marketable skills and creating real-world projects. Relationships with local businesses and community organizations like Sound Unseen Film Festival and Grinkie Girls, give the students an opportunity to apply their skills outside of the classroom. Upon completion of the program, students will have built a solid portfolio of projects that show a vast array of skills and techniques. This portfolio is used as stepping stone into post-secondary education or as a tool for students to promote themselves to perspective clients on an independent level.
The newest addition to the DMA is Screen printing. Classes in printmaking include screen printing and T-shirt design and creation. And the in-house print shop, Screen Dreams, allows students the chance for hands-on experience, creating and selling screen printed products to the community. Students translate their graphic design work into real world products worn on the backs of folks throughout the Twin Cities: logos and designs created and printed on t-shirts, sweat shirts, backpacks and more. The screen printing studio is equipped with everything to make high quality products.
