I recently had the pleasure of being entertained by a number of Banaadir Academy 6th<\/sup>\u00a0graders as they shared stories they\u2019d written in class. From the author\u2019s chair in front of their classmates, they read their manuscripts, beautifully bound and covered.<\/p>\n

The first story was \u201cPlot Twist.\u201d After the author finished reading, Ms. Oliver, their teacher asked \u201cIs it realistic, were the characters believable?\u201d And the class yelled \u201cyes\u201d and one girl shared, \u201cI really liked the details.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stories covered topics like sporting events, concerts, shopping expeditions and more.\u00a0\u00a0The stories were also full of details about chosen clothing, nervous situations and companionship\u2014youth life.<\/p>\n

One story was set in the future, on the character\u2019s graduation day, and featured some amazing dialogue.<\/p>\n

Not only were the stories interesting and fun to hear, writing stories also lets students try on another identity. Stories also give students a place to grapple and discover, \u201cstop caring what other people think.\u201d Said one character.<\/p>\n

Folowing the stories, was a bit of a party with treats and a lot of laughing, because, as Ms. Oliver said, \u201cauthors celebrate!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>
