Yes, the statute allows a public school student residing in Minnesota to apply to a Minnesota Virtual Schools (MNVS) part-time online learning at no cost to the student.

Minnesota Statutes section 124D.095 Subd 3a, articulates the following online learning enrollment parameters: A student age 17 or younger must have the written consent of a parent or guardian to apply. No school district or charter school may prohibit a student from applying to enroll in online learning. An online learning student may enroll during a single school year in a maximum of 12 semester-long courses or their equivalent delivered by an online learning provider in a comprehensive program or through supplemental online learning up to 50 percent of the student’s full schedule of courses per term at their enrolling district. A student may exceed the supplemental OLL registration limit if the enrolling district grants permission for additional supplemental OLL enrollment or if the student’s enrolling district has waived the 50% of the online learning credit limit on the MDE OLL form.

There are many different reasons a student may need supplemental online classes such as scheduling conflicts, course variety needs, alternative learning styles, teacher/conflict bullying/classmate, early graduation needs, flexible start and end dates, quicker or slower pacing of work, physical limitations, or taking a course that was previously failed from a prior grade level.

Supplemental online learning, defined as an online course taken in place of a course period during the regular school day at a local district school, may not exceed 50 percent of the student’s full schedule of courses per term at their enrolling district and remain enrolled as a full time student in their local school. A student may exceed the supplemental OLL registration limit if the enrolling district waives the 50% of online credit limit.

You can access the Supplemental Part-Time Application by visiting our website at https://mtcs.org/virtual/enroll/pt-enrollment-instructions/

Students are able to enroll at anytime throughout the school year with the exception of enrolling before the end of the year deadline in April of that school year. The student, student’s parents or enrolling district must submit an application to the online learning provider with MNVS current Supplemental /Part Time Application or vice-versa. MNVS will notify the enrolling district of the student’s enrollment on a form provided by MDE (OLL Supplemental Notice of Student Enrollment Form) signed by both MNVS and enrolling district.

Students must have access to a personal or enrolling district issued laptop / chrome book along with internet access. All online learning material is provided online through written and video content. Technical support is readily available to all students. Students have the option to work at home or at the enrolling districts computer lab, meeting room or library to work on their supplemental online classes.

Yes, a student can participate and or continue extracurricular activities at their local enrolling school while enrolled in supplemental online learning classes.

Once the student has all the necessary paperwork submitted they will receive online classes requested by the enrolling district – based off of what they still need to complete per their graduation requirements. The student will have 24/7 access to their online courses and along with a support specialist and weekly progress reports. Teachers are available for any questions or one on one help during school hours. Once the course is completed by the requested end date, a transcript will be generated and sent to the enrolling district. That transcript will be added to the student’s original transcript for credit.

The online school option was a good experience for Jack. Gave him a chance to learn how to be self-directed and independent. Also gave him a break from the traditional school environment which doesn’t always work well for him. Just wanted you to know.
