Ten years ago, the Leadership Academy at MTS Secondary renamed itself the General Colin L. Powell Leadership Academy, with the blessing of General Powell. General Powell’s personal experience with the ROTC program as a student, and his leadership style aligned very strongly with what the Academy at MTS was becoming—a school to motivate young people to be better citizens. The Colin L. Powell Leadership program is all about teamwork, leadership and building character. Though we attempted to coordinate a visit with General Powell at the school, his schedule did not permit it.

The values General Powell is known for, are the tenets of the work happening in the Colin L. Powell Leadership Academy, with its commitment to teaching its students about character, social responsibility, teamwork and selfless service to the community combined with achievement, leadership and American heritage to help cadets realize the power of their potential.

General Powell has left a continuing legacy at General Colin L. Powell Leadership Academy, in this tuition free public school program with its great education and rich experiences. As the first African-American Secretary of State, General Powell is a strong example to students in a program, that serves largely students of color, that their future is theirs to create.
