Section 504 Process for Students

Some students with disabilities may not qualify for special education services. These students may qualify for accommodations and supports under Section 504 or the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in any agencies receiving federal dollars. The law defines a person with a disabling condition as anyone who:

  • Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities;

  • Has a record of such an impairment; or

  • Is regarded as having such an impairment. If a student has a physical or mental impairment that may be impacting him/her in the educational setting, parents/guardians should contact the building administrator regarding their concerns.

Each MTCS program also has a Building 504 Coordinator. For more information about the resources available for your student, or to request a Section 504 evaluation, contact your school’s 504 coordinator.
