Fourteen cadets from the General Colin L. Powell Leadership Academy and MTS High School gathered on a Saturday morning on the Minneapolis Greenway to participate in the founding of JROTC’s 99 Year Anniversary 5K Run — along with 28,144 runners worldwide – making it the largest 5K running event in the U.S.! The goal was to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest race, which was not quite met, but next year’s 100th anniversary will mark another try. Runners from around the country and world met at the same exact time, including Cadets from 425 high schools, 30 college ROTCs, and 7 military bases, in 43 states , even other countries.

For the General Colin L. Powell Leadership Academy cadets, the run was a great example of the commitment and camaraderie of this tight-knit group of students who are involved in all kinds of community service and other events around the city. Cadets learn teamwork, self-discipline, organization, leadership theory, and citizenship skills to prepare them for their futures.

This summer the Leadersip Academy will offer three Leadership lab experiences for high school students to try out the program.
