Marcie Anderson, kindergarten teacher at MTS Elementary School, obtained a $3,572 grant from Hennepin County to begin a recycling program.
The entire school is involved, as the milk and juice cartons and all paper products are put into recycling containers.  Food scraps and compostable materials are collected and traded for compost from the county that is ready for the garden.
One requirement for the grant is to collect data on the weekly quantity in the  recycling bin as compared to the trash container.  The fourth-graders handle this task.
“I did this because we need to be good stewards of the earth and teach the little ones,” said Anderson. “Our kids notice what we can do to help the earth.”  Additional school recycling grants for 2016 are available from Hennepin County.
