A spelling bee is a competition, and in the case of Banaadir Academy, the winner of the spelling bee takes the prize of a pizza party organized for their homeroom class, so there was quite a bit of incentive from the audience for various students to win! However, from the audience, what was very noticeable was the delight all the students seemed to take when the word was spelled correctly—by any of the contestants. And when a word was missed, and the student left the contest to join the audience, arms went around shoulders and you heard things like, “Good job!”

Mr. Sam and Ms. Mara organized and emceed (that would have been a good spelling bee word!) the middle school event which took place in the bright Banaadir Academy gym. Twelve contestants sat in a U shape in front of their peers and teachers, and the words were announced. Students could ask for the word to be repeated and for it to be used in a sentence. The words got harder as the competition advanced, ultimately spelling high school words. You could see thrilled grins when they got the word spelled correctly.

The winner of the spelling bee was 8th grade Ramla and the runner-up, 6th grade, Hibo—both of them spelling high school words at the end. Three weeks ago, all the middle school students had a written contest, the top spellers then moved on to spellling bees in their home rooms, and finally the winners moved on to the main event. Congratulations Ramla!
