Banaadir Academy High School science teacher, Emma Donley recently planned a special experience for Banaadir students by inviting Chemists from the University of Minnesota to talk about their work and career plans, and to do some very fun experiments! The five U of M students shared what made them decide to pursue chemistry, what their average day was like, and more.
The University students’ passion for chemistry was so clear and Banaadir students had so many questions for them! One of the University students shared that he helped discover a chemical process that converts plastic water bottles into a disposable material, and was working toward a patent.
Science is about trying to solve problems and collaborating.
Banaadir students pulled their chairs up close to watch the experiments. A favorite was mixing chemicals that exploded foam up into the air a few feet.
One of the University students credited great teachers in high school for stretching her imagination. I think that’s exactly what is happening at Banaadir Academy. Some of these students might change the world.
