Principal Larry Ronglien is holding a series of meetings with all high students to discuss racism and discrimination. He starts with a famous 1970 news video about a third grade Iowa teacher who lets students experience discrimination by ranking them by their eye color.

With invited guests, Ronglien asks how prejudice starts, if it is learned and then invites discussion. He emphasizes that although the mainly white MTCS staff cannot totally understand the hurting effects of discrimination, they are committed to providing classes, educational options and supports to encourage each student to reach his or her potential.

Future meetings will involve a presentation by Penumbra Theatre, a group known for its thought provoking presentations on the African American experience.
