February 17, 2025 Board Meeting Summary
Amazing things can happen when teachers, parents and the community work together to create educational opportunities for youth.
The February Board of Directors Meeting had a number of important developments we want you to know about. As a Minnesota Public Charter school our teachers are the Board’s majority which keeps our focus on students as our priority. The MTCS Board of Directors welcomed Jynaya Jackson as our newest Director. Mrs. Jackson is the parent of students at MTS Elementary and MTS Secondary and will be filling the vacant parent seat on the Board. We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Jackson and her perspective as a long term MTCS parent to the board.
Superintendent Fondow with the Finance and HR departments have worked to create multiple pathways forward in regards to staff compensation at MTCS. In an effort to communicate the plan options and to gather feedback for the Board of Directors, all staff are invited to attend one of three upcoming Q & A sessions. Two sessions will be live and one will be virtual. A staff survey will follow the completion of the three sessions.
- Wednesday 3/5 – 3:00-4:00 at Banaadir Academy
- Thursday 3/6 – 3:00-4:00 Virtually – Join with this link
- Wednesday 3/12 – 3:30-4:30 MTS Secondary
In an effort to clarify staff eligibility for the upcoming MTCS Board of Driector’s election, it was determined by our school’s attorney that the position of TOSA does not meet statutory requirements to serve as a teacher member of a charter school board. This determination, unfortunately, required a change in the board’s structure. The seat held by Peter Rand has been vacated due to his ineligibility (based on his current role at MNVS). Tyler Frankhouse was asked by the remaining board members to act as Board Chair while serving in his current position of Vice-Chair. The eligibility of another board member, Zahra Farah was subsequently called into question as there was confusion between the role of TOSA and teaching under an out of field permission granted by PELSB. Zahra Farah serves as a teacher interventionist with a valid out of field permission and does not serve in a TOSA role. The membership of the MTCS Board of Directors is currently in compliance with MN state law.
Thank you for all you do in service of our students!
