Reading is her joy, and MTS is in her heritage. That’s part of why Tierra Jackson came back, as a volunteer and teacher’s aide.

The 2012 JROTC graduate is a friendly addition to Banaadir Academy, where she reads with kindergarteners and takes part in the “Daily Five” language arts program.

“It’s good one-on-one because I can’t reach every child each day,” said Kindergarten teacher Kirsten Krueger. “They get a lot of one-onone
attention, which they love.” Jackson’s community service started early, at about age 12. “My mom started me out with a reading summer program through libraries,” she said. She attended summer camps and was a youth leader.

Jackson played bingo with veterans, helped out with activities and participated in color guard events. A student at North Hennepin Community and Technical College, she is studying business administration.
