What Is MTS Secondary School?
MTS Secondary is a public charter middle and high school serving students in grades 7 through 12 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a program of Minnesota Transitions Charter School (MTCS), a K–12 charter school district with over 25 years of experience educating students in the Twin Cities.
Located at 2872 26th Avenue S, Minneapolis, MN 55406, MTS Secondary offers a flexible, personalized learning environment designed for students who thrive with individualized attention, alternative learning structures, or a stronger sense of community than larger schools can provide.
MTS Secondary is tuition-free and open to all Minnesota students in grades 7–12.
We Serve Students Other Schools Couldn’t Reach
MTS Secondary exists for students who struggled in traditional school settings — students who fell behind, felt overlooked in large classrooms, or simply needed a different environment to thrive.
That means our students often arrive at MTS Secondary significantly behind grade level. Many have experienced gaps in their education, difficult transitions, or learning challenges that were never fully addressed elsewhere. When you look at standardized test scores, that history shows up in the data.
We think that context matters.
What the scores don’t show is the student who hadn’t been to school consistently in two years — and is now attending every day. They don’t show the ninth grader who came in reading at a fifth grade level and finished the year reading at a seventh grade level. They don’t show the student who finally feels safe enough to ask for help.
At MTS Secondary, progress is personal. We measure success by how far each student has come — not just where they land compared to a state average built around a very different student population.
If you want to know how our students are growing, we’d love to show you.
Why Families Choose MTS Secondary
Personalized Learning Paths
At MTS Secondary, no two students follow the exact same path. Teachers work directly with students to build individualized academic plans that account for learning styles, goals, and pace. Students can accelerate toward graduation, build foundational skills, or pursue a mix of in-person and online coursework.
Small School, Big Support
With intentionally small class sizes, students at MTS Secondary are known by name — not a student ID. Educators build genuine relationships with students and families, making it easier to catch challenges early and celebrate progress consistently.
Career and College Readiness
MTS Secondary prepares students for what comes after high school. Through work-based learning, college prep resources, PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options), and partnerships with local organizations, students graduate with real-world experience and a clear next step.
A Welcoming, Inclusive Community
MTS Secondary serves a diverse student population in Minneapolis and is committed to creating a safe, equitable, and culturally affirming environment for every learner — including English language learners, students receiving special education services, and students who have struggled in traditional school settings.
FAQs about MTS Secondary
MTS Secondary intentionally serves students who have struggled in traditional school environments — including students who experienced academic gaps, needed more individualized support, or didn’t feel seen in larger schools. Many students arrive at MTS Secondary significantly below grade level, which is reflected in standardized test scores.
Those scores don’t tell the full story. What they don’t capture is the growth individual students make from where they started, the consistency students build after years of disengagement, or the confidence that comes from finally being in an environment designed for them.
MTS Secondary measures success through individual progress, not just state averages. We’re proud to serve the students who need us most — and we’d rather be honest about that than pretend our school is something it’s not.
