Minnesota Virtual – High School

The K-12 academic community of MTCS is the largest group of charter schools in the state of Minnesota. We are a tuition-free, public school with eight options that serve students in the Twin Cities metro area through our brick and mortar school sites, as well as greater Minnesota through our online options.

Reasons students choose a virtual classroom vary which include:

  • Need for a flexible schedule

  • Due to health reasons

  • Desire for a quicker or slower pace

  • Regular one-to-one help with licensed teacher

  • Elimination of peer distractions during educational time

In order to be eligible to enroll in MNVHS, a student must live in Minnesota, be in grades 9-12 and be under 21 years old.

Successful Student

A successful student typically takes personal responsibility for their education. The following are a list of habits and characteristics that help students reach academic success in a virtual school:

  • Is self-driven – does not require close monitoring to stay on task

  • Works about six hours for each school day

  • Follows teacher created schedules on a weekly basis

  • Asks teachers when they have questions

  • Communicates with their academic coach

  • Accountable to their parent/guardian

Our Staff

Teachers are available for help during regular school hours or by appointment; each teacher has set aside specific chat hours for immediate help. Teachers utilize chat, phone, email and a shared-screen program as needed to communicate with students. They want to meet students where they’re at and help them complete their courses successfully.

Each student is assigned an student support specialist, and they are the main point of contact for families and oversee attendance compliance.

Curriculum

All content material is online and meets state education requirements. Assessments are taken or uploaded & submitted online. There is a lot of reading, some integrated videos, and no recorded lectures. Plato curriculum from Edmentum is used as the base for many of the courses. However, teachers may utilize other curriculum in whole or in part for their courses.

Following teacher-created schedules is recommended; though students can work at their own pace. Students may work more quickly in certain classes, more slowly in others, and do not need to keep pace with any other students or teachers. The attendance requirement must be met and classes completed by the end of the term. Students can work 24/7 beginning the morning of their start date until the end of term. There is not a required time they must be online any particular day

Special Education

We provide an array of special education services in an online setting including IEP evaluations and case management. Our special education teachers implement direct instruction in Language Arts, Math, Social Skills and Life Skills. A full-time paraprofessional assists students in tasks determined during IEP meetings. Contracted service providers are utilized as needed.
