Kindergarten students share their stories
If you haven’t read a kindergarten student personal narrative lately, well, you might want to. The way a kindergartner sees a day or an experience in their life can be illuminating. And reading it in phonetic spelling can be an exciting, creative exercise.
Recently, at Banaadir North Campus, kindergarten teachers collaborated to create an exciting literary project where students shared an important experience in their lives, as a story. They thought it up, wrote it, illustrated it and bound it for parents, staff, fellow students and school leadership to come and share with them.
From snow storms, to birthday parties and visits with cousins, the Banaadir North students had a lot to share about their lives. “Did you read mine? Come on, I’ll read it to you!” I cannot tell you how many times I sat down to hear a story.
Learning to tell stories is at the heart of the human experience and these five and six year-old children have a lot to say about their lives. At the same time, they are developing strong reading and writing skills early in their academic career. These are skills that will last their lifetime.
“Putting this together is a lot of work, but well worth it!” said one of the teachers. “Look at this!” And I looked around at dozens of students, heads bent over a page of a classmate’s story in delight. And then there was cake.
